About Us Montemaggio follows the concept of a very high quality “Terroir” wine. We have a chance to look at the quality of wine in every bottle and make sure that customer gets a very special product. The wines have been planted with a very high density per hectare (6250 plants/hectare in some vineyards). During the harvest, every bunch undergoes considerable selection in the vineyard and later again in the vinery. Harvest is carried out manually, and only when the grapes are perfectly ripe. Therefore, it could be said that Fattoria di Montemaggio’s wines are 100% hand-made, and they preserve all the quality of the elements that are a part of the land where they have been cultivated. www.montemaggio.com
CHIANTI CLASSICO GRAN SELEZIONE DI MONTEMAGGIO In February 2014, the new Chianti Classico pyramid with the new top tier of Gran Selezione was launched by a Consorzio Chianti Classico with a presentation in grand style in the Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio. So what defines this new Chianti Classico pyramid? Well, there are now three tiers in the Chianti Classico denomination, namely Annata, Riserva, and Chianti Classico Gran Selezione di Montemaggio. The Annata can be released on the market on October 1st following the year of the harvest, while the Riserva needs to age at least 24 months of which at least 3 months in the bottle. The Gran Selezione shall be produced with grapes from a single vineyard or with a selection of the best grapes from vineyards owned by the wine producer in question. www.montemaggio.com
www.montemaggio.com This means that it is enough that different properties are under the same ownership even if they are in different subzones of the Chianti Classico district. Fermentation takes place in conical wood trunk vats with a controlled temperature (less than 26° C). Malolactic fermentation then undergoes in stainless steel and wooden vats. Thereafter for about 30 months, maturation takes place partially in large barrels (32 Hl) and partially in tonneaux (5 Hl) for the first and second passages. The new three-tier system of the Consorzio Chianti Classico was brought about to enhance the overall quality and provide a top tier of the highest quality, namely Gran Selezione. The original ideas were beneficial for the consortium, though it then, as explained above, has been argued that the selection process of the yearly Gran Selezione wines is too subjective and giving rise to conflicts of interest.
It was quite difficult for us to decide how our Chianti Classico Gran Selezione di Montemaggio will be different from our Riserva, but at the end we managed to come up with a brilliant solution. The Sangiovese grapes for Gran Selezione will be sourced only from one particular vineyard – the only north-facing and Alberello grown vineyard out of the entire estate. The grapes for Riserva will be sourced from the entire estate, hence resulting in 2 completely different wines. Current vintage of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione di Montemaggio is 2012. www.montemaggio.com
IL CIELO DI MONTEMAGGIO IGT Chardonnay grapes have been grown in Montemaggio since 2009, in order to offer our clients a fresh alternative to the reds especially in summer. The process of selection for these grapes is as rigorous as for other grapes in Montemaggio. After the harvest and various stages of selection, the must is fermenting at controlled temperature in order to preserve all the fruit and aromas of the future wine. After the fermentation the young wine is aged in new and aged wood. In Montemaggio we grow grapes with very low yields, which is an absolutely essential parameter for making quality wine. During the harvest, the grapes are harvested by hand in crates and afterwards the berry by berry is selected, and everything that does not meet high quality criteria is eliminated. During the fermentation, the temperature of the must is regularly checked to preserve all the aromas and fragrances of the future wine. www.montemaggio.com
www.montemaggio.com The reason we called this wine “Cielo di Montemaggio” came about one starry night when we have recorded a video of Montemaggio’s sky. Cielo mean sky in italian, and since that video the pelage in this sparkling wine seemed so delicate and so many, that it seemed to have 1000s of stars of Montemaggio sky in a glass. Hence comes the vivid blue colour of the labels with constellation and stars. All Fattoia di Montemaggio’s wines are certified with the organic label, using only grapes grown following organic methods of agriculture, therefore without synthetic chemicals and without GMOs. The sulphite content is very low compared to non-organic wines.
