  1. Ozone and UV Monitoring and Research Activities in the Czech Republic Ladislav Metelka Czech Hydrometeorological Institute Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic The 9-thMeeting of Ozone Research Managers for the Vienna Convention Geneva, 14-16. May, 2014 9-ORMM, Geneva, 2014L. Metelka, CHMI

  2. ObservationalActivities Monitoring of Total Ozone The Solar and Ozone Observatory of CHMI, Hradec Kralove (SOO-HK) Dobson (D074) and Brewer (B098 and B184) spectrophotometers D074 since 1961, B098 since 1994 and B184 since 2004 9-ORMM, Geneva, 2014L. Metelka, CHMI

  3. Observational Activities Monitoring of vertical distribution of ozone The Upper Air Department of CHMI, Praha – Libuš (UAD-PR) Brewer-Mast ozone sondes since 1978, ECC & Vaisala facility since 1992 9-ORMM, Geneva, 2014L. Metelka, CHMI

  4. Recent Research and Development Activities „Long-Term Changes of the Ozone Layer Over the Czech Republic“ Supported by the Czech Grant Agency – Project No. P209/10/0058, 2010-2012 • Outputs: • Homogenized and merged D&B TOZ data series of 1961-2010 were created and deposited at PANGEA: http://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.779819 • Analysesoftemporalevolutionofbothseasonaltotal ozone valuesand ozone partialpressureatselectedlevelswerecarriedout. • The Neural Networks and Extreme Values Models were used for trend evaluation – using all essential atmospheric and geophysical proxies. 9-ORMM, Geneva, 2011L. Metelka, CHMI

  5. Recent Research and Development Activities Increasing of TOZ begun in Winter-Spring but reduction in Summer still persists. A certain recovery and stabilization of ozone in middle stratosphere, ozone in troposphere has doubled (January to April) 9-ORMM, Geneva, 2011L. Metelka, CHMI

  6. Recent Research and Development Activities Contribution of the essential proxies to the depletion of TOZ over Central Europe in 1961-2010, as estimated by the Neural Networks Model. Decreasing role of the EESC and increasing influence of the UT/LS dynamics over the region have been foundsincemid 90s. The solar cycle influence isneutral in the long-term scaleand volcanic effects areonlyepisodic. Estimation of the future depletion of TOZ by EESConly, over Central Europe if SOLAR, AOD and UT/LS proxies remain stable (the Neural Networks Modelexperimental run) 9-ORMM, Geneva, 2014L. Metelka, CHMI

  7. Recent Research and Development Activities „Upgrade of technological equipments for Monitoring of the ozone layer and solar UV in the Czech Republic“ Supported by the Ministry forEnvironment of CR – Project No. 03431021, 2012-2013 • Outputs: • The UV calibration unit as a national etalon for calibrations of the UV monitoring instruments available at SOO-HK • The solar photometer SPUV-10 installed and operated at SOO-HK • A new ozone tester bought for UAD-PR • 67 ozone sondeslaunched at UAD-PR 9-ORMM, Geneva, 2014L. Metelka, CHMI

  8. Recent Research and Development Activities „MATCH“: International ozone sonde campaigns for the quantification of polar chemical ozone loss, every year since 1998. Participation in yearly campaigns by alert ozone sonde flights. Supported by CHMI, realized by UAD-PR. „A EUropeanBREWerNETwork – EUBREWNET“: Creation of a joint infrastructure for operation of the Brewer spectrophotometers in Europe. CHMI SOO Hradec Králové is mostly involved in creation and implementation of the operational software and calibration procedures of the instruments. Supported by the COST- ES1207 Action, 2013-2017. „The Contribution of the Czech Republic to the Detection of the State of the Ozone Layer and Solar UV-radiation in Antarctica“ Supported by the Ministry for the Environment of CR, in cooperation of the CHMI and the Argentine Antarctic Institute. A separate presentation by Michal Janouch. 9-ORMM, Geneva, 2014L. Metelka, CHMI

  9. International Cooperations • Contribution to theactivities of the Regional Dobson Calibration Center – Europe / MOHpHohepeissenberg, GermanyCalibration of Dobson instruments and training of operators for new Dobson GAW stations. SOO-HK, supported by CHMI. • Subregionalintercomparisons of Brewer spectrophotometers at SOO-HK, 2005 - 2013 Biannual missions attended by Brewers from Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. Servicing and calibration of instruments towards the travel reference from EC Toronto by the International Ozone Service. 9-ORMM, Geneva, 2011L. Metelka, CHMI
