  1. Urinary System Drugs

  2. Diuretics cause diuresis • Promote urination, usually as adjunct to tx for HBP. • Side effects: hypokalemia (low serum potassium is common side effect) • Take potassium supplements OR eat more bananas and orange juice with them • Hypokalemia causes: irregular heart rhythms, muscle weakness, malaise

  3. Most common diuretic is: • Thiazide type ex. Hydrochlorthiazide marketed as Hydrodiuril or Esidrix

  4. Loop diuretics • Block water reabsorbtion in loop of Henle and distal tubules therefore promote excretion • Used for HBP, also cause hypokalemia • Ex. Lasix (furosemide) most common and very powerful. • IV lasix for allergic edema! Congestive heart failure!

  5. Potassium saving Diuretics • No hypokalemia side effect • Used for HBP • Avoid with pts taking ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors for HBP as well. They retain too much potassium! • Ex. Spironolactone (Aldactone)

  6. Medications for BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy) • Relax the smooth muscles around an enlarging, aging prostate gland causing urinary incontinence in elderly • Ex. Proscar, Flomax, Hydrin, Avodart, Cardura
