  3. SECTOR DESCRIPTION • After seven consecutive years of uninterrupted growth, the Spanish IT sector experienced a -7.45% drop in Total Turnover sales during 2002. This decline is numerically greater than the growth registered a year earlier, which means there was a reversion to the level attained in 2000. The total Turnover for this sector amounted to 15,619 million euros.(source: Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology,MCyT) • The Gross Domestic Market, dropped -4.68% to 14,410 million euros.The Net Domestic Market closed the year down -2.84% to 11,439 million euros (taking away endogenous activity) Ivan Carrasco. SECTOR DESCRIPTION • In 2002 there was also a very significant slump in foreign trade: while Exports fell -31.28%, returning to levels reached five years ago, Imports declined much less, by -9.33%. • The upward trend of the IT market in recent years took a pause in 2001, which turned into a clear retreat the following year. This turn was not exceptional in Europe: all of the EU countries registered a weakening of demand, as the direct expression of a difficult economic environment. This, undoubtedly, had an effect on Spanish IT exports, which are aimed mainly at those markets. NOTE: Madrid and Catalonia together make up 67.1% of the Spanish market for computing products and services. Ivan Carrasco. March 2004

  6. SECTOR OF DESCRIPTIONEMPLOYMENT • One of the consequences of the slowdown has been the reduction in employment levels. At the end of the year, the total number of persons employed by IT companies was 90,373 or 3.22% less than in the same period of 2001. The net loss affected 3,007 jobs. All of the employment indicators have gone down by about five percentage points. It is particularly worth mentioning that billing per employee fell to 138.54 thousand euros per year.

As the report states, "One cannot recall having seen a situation of such high volatility in which, on the other hand, all the world markets coincide in showing a downward trend."

SECTOR DESCRIPTIONTENDENCIES & PROSPECTS • According to EITO (Observatory of the Technology of the European Information), in 2004 sector IT in Spain will grow a 5.4 percent, (1.2 percent in Germany,the 2.4 percent of France and United Kingdom, and the 1.7 percent of Italy.) • EITO confirmed their previous estimation of a 3.1 percent of growth in 2004 for the market of ICT, of 611,000 million euros, and said that the acceleration would extend that number to a 4.4 percent in the 2005. This is better than the growth of the 0.8 percent of 2003 but still it is very below the indices of growth superior to the 10 percent that was obtained in period 1998-2000.

  12. CONCLUSIONS • The Spanish IT sector dropped a -7.45% in Total Turnover sales in 2002 • Subcontractors and resellers were the ones who felt demand shrink the most • The Trade Balance closed with a deficit of 3,533.6 million euros • Unnemployment increese in 3.22% from 2001 to 2002
