  1. Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems Large vs. Mini-Pick • Morgan Foth • October 30th, 2009

  2. What is AS/RS? • AS/RS is the “product to man” concept • Focuses on finding a specific desired item and delivering it to the operator • AS/RS applications come in two main varieties (Large and Mini-Pick)

  3. Large vs. Mini-PickWhy use Large AS/RS? • Variety of items being stored • Necessary to retrieve specific items • Large quantities of item(s) • Eliminates tedious downtime (manually searching/retrieving) • Makes effective use of storage space

  4. Large vs. Mini-PickWhy use Mini-Pick AS/RS? • Cost - Mini-Pick are significantly cheaper than Large AS/RS • Lack of variety in stored items • Size of items is small • Amount of items stored is small • No need for item delivery, just location • Security of items

  5. Overview of AS/RS • Large Systems (U of U ARC) http://www.lib.utah.edu/portal/site/marriottlibrary/menuitem.350f2794f84fb3b29cf87354d1e916b9/?vgnextoid=56cf849d6c2db110VgnVCM1000001c9e619bRCRD&vgnextchannel=354f855fcfb62110VgnVCM1000001c9e619bRCRD • Small Systems (Ben & Jerry’s) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiQ7I6jk7FY&feature=related

  6. Large Systems • Defense Visual Information Center • Four stories high • Footprint: Half the size of a football field • Barcoded bins • Environmentally controlled, self-contained • Robotics track guided system

  7. ARC (Automatic Retrieval Center) U of U • Cost: $12 million • Size: 3.5 stories tall • Wait time for book: 5-10 mins. • Saves time and space • Downside: eliminates ability to browse; essentially separates consumer from item • Upside: Cuts down on vandalism in same way (separating consumer from item) • Costs only $4 per item to store automatically versus $20 per item for traditional floor space • Opened up 20,000 square feet • Built by HK Systems

  8. Light up or otherwise indicate location of desired item • Varying degrees of automation-some deliver, some don’t • Can be used for small, individual items rather than large units or groupings Mini-Pick Systems

  9. Mini-Bioreactor Systems By Hudson Control Groups • System costs over $100,000 • Can run autonomously for several days without human interaction • System automatically loads, samples and feeds cells • Performs up to 24 independent reaction conditions simultaneously • GUI enabled input of condition algorithms - software will compare desired to actual • Requires 18 Amps, 115 VAC, 80 psi • Fits within 24” x 60” fume hood

  10. redbox • Each box costs $20,000 • Can hold more than 600 DVDs total • Combines an interactive touch screen with a robotic disc array system • Contains a carousel • Turns to appropriate DVD, retrieves with robotic arm

  11. Trek StopAdvanced Concept Group • Air Compressor • Two PCs • Information/tutorial stand • Clamp to repair bike • 24/7 access • Route info

  12. Z-400 Ice CreamMachine • Company: Fastcorp • Capacity: More than 400 pieces of inventory with up to 120 units per selection • Robotic Vacuum picker arm=no moving parts in the freezer! • Three interchangeable motors for up/down, left/right, and front/back motion • Accurate within 1/16” of target location • Dimensions: 72” tall, 37” wide, 35.5” deep, 645 lbs. • Price: $4,875

  13. Standards • Evolved through the Material Handling Industry of America AS/RS and ASME • MH24.1-2005: Safety Standard for Horizontal Carousel Material Handling and Associated Equipment: 5.4.1. General Requirements: Safety markings and safeguardings shall be provided to protect personnel from inadvertent contact with moving machinery parts. Personnel shall be instructed in the meaning of such protection. Authorized and qualified operators shall have access to only the Operator Interface Areas and only for the purpose of the designed operation. Qualified maintenance personnel shall have access to perform functions as described in Section 6 (Inspection, Testing & Maintenance). • B30.13 - 2003 Storage/Retrieval (S/R) Machines and Associated Equipment Available for purchase through ASME ($57)

  14. Application Rules/Limitations • What are you vending? • How do humans interact? Software, physical retrieval, etc? Manual/Visual accessibility to product? • Environmental limitations? • How can the machine fail? (Selected product sold out, clogged) • What kind of space do you have for the equipment?

  15. Summary • Large AS/RS are becoming more common - expect to see them having a more significant impact on you in the near future! • Mini-Pick systems are everywhere and are rapidly finding more creative applications. • Know when to automate and when to “not-omate”. Is automation going to benefit your application?
