  1. Refusal Skills • Nonverbal • Check your body and mind for clues about how you feel • Try to remain CALM if you have strong feelings. • Breathe normally without holding your breath

Refusal Skills • Verbal • Starting by saying a direct “NO.” • Find your own way to say you choose not to do it • Suggest another activity or change the subject • Do not write this BUT, somebody say an example • Be willing to discuss why you feel that way. • Make it clear that if your friend does it, you don’t hold it against him or her.

  3. Whose Line is it anyway? • ALL students will create a situation where refusal skills are needed. After you are done creating a situation, fold the paper and put it in the box. • Students will go up in pairs. One will read the situation and one will respond using refusal skills. All students will read a scenario, and use a refusal skill responding. • THINK ABOUT ALL COMMUNICATION SKILLS YOU HAVE LEARNED!!

  4. Exit Ticket • Why do you think refusal skills are important to learn/know?

  5. Create A Prompt • Using your notes. Think about all FIVE communications skills you have learned. Create a prompt using refusal skills. Put yourself in a real life situation where you think refusal skills can come into play. This assignment will be passed in at the end of class and graded.
