  1. 31 January 2014 Potential Dividers Learning Objective To investigateuse of a potential divider. Some • Calculate output voltage from formula Vout = Vin x R2/(R1+R2) (A/B) Most • explainhow a fixed resistor and variable resistor can be used to produce a variable output. (B/C) All • explain how two resistors can be used as a potential divider. (C) • All – explain how two resistors can be used as a potential divider. (C) • Most - explain how a fixed resistor and variable resistor can produce a variable output. (B/C) • Some - Calculate output voltage from formula vout = vin x R2/(R1+R2) (A/B)

  2. To investigateuse of a potential divider. Starter Resistance differentiated task – 10 minutes. • All – explain how two resistors can be used as a potential divider. (C) • Most - explain how a fixed resistor and variable resistor can produce a variable output. (B/C) • Some - Calculate output voltage from formula vout = vin x R2/(R1+R2) (A/B)

  3. To investigateuse of a potential divider. Potential Difference • When a power source is added to a circuit a potential difference (or voltage) is generated in the circuit. • The higher the potential difference in the power source the more voltage is produced. 1.5V 6V

  4. To investigateuse of a potential divider. Resistors in Series • When resistors are placed in series they divide the voltage between them depending on the strength of the resistor. The two resistors are the same size so the voltage is split evenly

  5. To investigateuse of a potential divider. Potential Dividers • A potential divider is an arrangement that uses resistors to deliver only a proportion of the voltage from a battery.

  6. To investigateuse of a potential divider. Example 10k 6V Voltage out 10k 3V

  7. To investigateuse of a potential divider. Other types of potential divider • We can replace of the resistors in our example with a variable resistor, LDR (light dependent resistor) or thermistor. • Explain the function of each one of these components; • Variable Resistor • LDR • Thermistor

  8. To investigateuse of a potential divider. Variable Resistor 10k 6V Voltage out 0-10k 0-3V What do you think the use of this circuit could be?

  9. To investigateuse of a potential divider. LDR – What will change the voltage out? 10k 6V Voltage out 0-10k 0-3V What do you think the use of this circuit could be?

  10. To investigateuse of a potential divider. Thermistor – What will change the voltage out? 10k 6V Voltage out 0-10k 0-3V What do you think the use of this circuit could be?

  11. Capacitors A capacitor stores small amounts of electric charge. They are used in smoothing circuits and time-delay circuits.

  12. Capacitor – What will happen? 10k 6V 0 rising to 6V after switch closes 1000 f What do you think the use of this circuit could be?

  13. Learning Objectives • All – to understand the term potential divider • Most – to understand how a potential divider can be used to deliver a proportion of voltage from a power source • Some – to be able to describe some of the uses of potential dividers.

  14. Reed Switch • A reed switch is operated by a magnetic field. • These are often used in Burglar alarms. Moving parts are in the doors and windows so when they are opened the reed switch opens and sets of the alarm. Symbol
