  2. General characteristics • Primary schools: Grade 1-8 (6 to 14 yrs) • Secondary schools: Grade 9-12 (15 to 18 yrs) - several typeswith different curricula: grammar schools technical schools vocational schools

  3. History – Primary schools (1) • Lower primary: Grade 1-3 (6-9 yrs): national holidays Grade 4 (10 yrs): myths, legends, the national Anthem (‘Himnusz’) • Upper primary: Grade 5 (11 yrs): prehistoric times, the Ancient Times the origins of Hungarians

  4. History – Primary schools (2) • Grade 6 (12 yrs):the Middle Ages in Europa the Middle Ages in Hungary the discovery of America the Ottoman Empire • Grade 7 (13 yrs): industrial development freedom fights (18-19th century) the Habsburg Monarchy World War I

  5. History – Primary schools (3) • Grade 8 (14 yrs):the 1920s and 1930s Hungary btw the world wars World War II the globalising world Hungary since 1945 civic rights studies

  6. History – secondary schools • Grade 9-12 (15-19 yrs), 4 years • Same topics as in primary schools but in more details • Using sources, maps, texts • Final school leaving (Matura) exam: • source analysis, short answers, essay writing

  7. Geography in primary schools (1) • Lower primary: your home, your school using the map orientation on the map weather settlements Budapest towns and cities in Hungary parts of Hungary, rivers the Globe

  8. Geography in primary schools (2) • Upper primary: the same but in more details • + Grade 7: the continents + history of the Earth • + Grade 8: the European Union

  9. Geography in secobóndary schools • Only 2 yeary (Grade 9-10, 15-16 yrs) • The place of humans • Globalisation • World economy challenges/problems • Final school leaving (Matura) exam
