  3. Cessation (noun) • The act of ceasing or stopping; a halt EX. The cessation of the loud noise enabled Pam to continue studying.

  4. Commence (trans. verb; intrans. verb) • To begin; start • To come into existence; have a beginning EX. The race commenced after the referee dropped the flag.

  5. Deter (trans. verb) • To prevent or discourage from acting, as by means of fear or doubt EX. The iciness of the roads deterred us from driving anywhere that day.

  6. Hamper (trans. verb; noun) • To prevent the free movement, action, or progress of; limit • A large basket, usually with a cover EX. Chuck’s tight shoes hampered his ability to dance.

  7. Obstruction (noun) • An obstacle; something that blocks or gets in the way EX. The rock landslide created an obstruction on the highway, blocking traffic on both sides.

  8. Preclude (trans. verb) • To make impossible or unlikely EX. Exclusively hot temperatures on the planet Venus preclude the possibility of there being any form of life there as we know it.

  9. Procrastinate (intrans. verb; trans. verb) • To put off doing something until a future time • To postpone or delay needlessly EX. Tom procrastinated about cutting the lawn until the grass was three inches high.

  10. Scuttle (intrans. verb; trans. verb) • To run hastily; scurry • To sink (a ship) by cutting or opening a hole in (its hull) EX. The second grader scuttled across the yard and entered the classroom just before the tardy bell.

  11. Subside (intrans. verb) • To sink to a lower or more normal level • To become less active EX. After Todd examined the test, his fear of not doing well subsided.

  12. Thwart (trans. verb) • To prevent from taking place; frustrate; block EX. A swarm of bees thwarted our plans for a picnic.
