  2. IEEE 802.15.4e – Study Group Purpose • To explore the possibility of MAC enhancements to the existing 802.15.4 standard and determine if the formation of a Task Troup is needed. • If it is determined that a Task Group is needed the Study Group will define the Scope of the Task Group (via a PAR). Focus • MAC only. Bob Heile, Clint Powell, Kuor-Hsin Chang, Phil Beecher, Michael Schmidt (ZigBee Alliance, Freescale, Integration, Atmel)

  3. IEEE 802.15.4c – Task Group Purpose • Extend the 802.15.4 standard to include the recently opened Chinese Sub-GHz Bands. Focus • Define a PHY standard that is compliant with Chinese regulations, limiting MAC changes only to those req’d. by the PHY. Bob Heile, Clint Powell, Kuor-Hsin Chang, Phil Beecher, Michael Schmidt (ZigBee Alliance, Freescale, Integration, Atmel)

  4. .4c Currently Discussed Proposals Atmel, Freescale, Integration Associates • Joint proposal rebanding 900 MHz OQPSK PHY down to 779-787 MHz band (4 channels) & change pulse shaping filter CWPAN • New PHY, incompatible with existing 802.15.4 PHY(s) Bob Heile, Clint Powell, Kuor-Hsin Chang, Phil Beecher, Michael Schmidt (ZigBee Alliance, Freescale, Integration, Atmel)

  5. CWPAN Major PHY D’s • PN Code • PN Codes are circular shifted by 1 instead of by 2 • PN Codes 8-15 are not complex conjugates of PN Codes 0-7 • PN Codes are floating-point numbers instead of binary numbers • PN Codes are not DC free • Based on technical input/guidance from IEEE 802.15.4c changes were made by the CWPAN to remove the DC offset, by addition of a DC removal block Bob Heile, Clint Powell, Kuor-Hsin Chang, Phil Beecher, Michael Schmidt (ZigBee Alliance, Freescale, Integration, Atmel)

  6. CWPAN Major PHY D’s (cont’d.) • Mapping Data to PN Code • The same mapping is not used for preamble, SFD and data payload • Modulation • M-ary PSK and not OQPSK • Non Constant Envelope • Increases PA linearity requirement • Increases TX DAC and Rx ADC requirement Bob Heile, Clint Powell, Kuor-Hsin Chang, Phil Beecher, Michael Schmidt (ZigBee Alliance, Freescale, Integration, Atmel)

  7. OQPSK Advantages Proven Technology Implementation Ease Maximum Reuse of Existing 802.15.4 Sub-GHz World Wide Compatible PHY Bob Heile, Clint Powell, Kuor-Hsin Chang, Phil Beecher, Michael Schmidt (ZigBee Alliance, Freescale, Integration, Atmel)
