  2. Subjects and Predicates

  3. Subjects • The subject is the part f the sentence that tells whom or what the sentence is about. • All the words in the subject are called the compete subject. • The simple subject is the most important word in the complete subject.

  4. Predicates • The predicate is the part of the sentence that tells what the subject is or does. • All the words in the predicate are called the complete predicate. • The simple predicate, or verb, is the most important word in the complete predicate.

  5. Example • My aunt lives in Ohio. • Complete subject: My aunt • Complete predicate: lives in Ohio • Simple subject: aunt • Simple predicate: lives

  6. Compound subject • A compound subject is made up of two or more subjects. • A compound predicate is made up of two or more predicates.

  7. example Gina and I live and work in Ohio. Compound subject: Gina and I Compound predicate: live and work

  8. Practice • Read the sentences. Find the complete subject, the complete predicate, the simple subject, and the simple predicate. • Please raise your hand and wait to be called on.

  9. Subjects and predicates--practice • My grandmother went to Ireland last summer. • The village of her ancestors is Portcawl. • Around 300 million people live in the United States. • Some of these residents are recent arrivals.

  15. Find the simple subject • We served food from all over the world. • Several kids dressed in their national costume. • Two Japanese girls demonstrated origami.

  16. Find the simple predicate • Many families came to visit. • Three of my classmates are from Mexico. • Pedro and Juan play center field and shortstop. • Jaime is our best pitcher.
