Body Cavities • Peritoneum: a mucous membrane that lines the abdominal and pelvic cavities and secretes a fluid to lubricate organs • Parietal: situated near the top and to the side • Parietalperitoneum: lines the abdominal cavity • Viscera: organs located inside body cavities • Visceral peritoneum: lines the pelvic cavity • Visceral: • Ascites: abnormal accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity
