Standards • WS 1.1: Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of discourse (e.g., purpose, speaker, audience, form) when completing narrative, expository, persuasive, or descriptive writing assignments. • WS 1.3: Structure ideas and arguments in a sustained, persuasive, and sophisticated way and support them with precise and relevant examples.

  3. Link to Prior Knowledge • List the 4 steps to writing a DBQ response • Annotate prompt: what are they asking you for? • Decide your argument. • Review documents to see which would back your argument. • Match the document with your argument per paragraph.

  4. Review • What is the definition of a DBQ? (Reitsma calls on 3 students) • Bullet Proof Definition: • A document based essay response that synthesizes at least three documents to support a main claim. • What does synthesize mean? • How does it relate to writing a DBQ response?

  5. I Do… • Look at the DBQ Prompt we did for homework. • I will complete the first step. • I have to keep in mind: “what are they asking me for?”

  6. Green living (practices that promote the conservation and wise use of natural resources) has become a topic of discussion in many parts of the world today. With changes in the availability and cost of natural resources, many people are discussing whether conservation should be required of all citizens. Carefully read the following six sources, including the introductory information for each source. Then synthesize information from at least three of the sources and incorporate it into a coherent, well-written essay that develops a position on the extent to which government should be responsible for fostering green practices. What is this prompt asking me for?

  15. Now… what is this prompt asking me for? Many parents find themselves facing decisions to seemingly treat ADHD in their children that seem unnecessary, including medications like Ritalin. In a well-organized essay that synthesizes at least three of the attached documents, discuss the benefits and drawbacks of medicating children with ADHD and the decisions parents would have to make in deciding treatment plans for their children.
