  1. Fundamentals of Technological Design :

  2. Designed around 1890 Are some designs so good that they do not need to be changed?

  3. Understanding Design Principles • An understanding of fundamental design principles, related to the decision-making process, provides the context for good design. • These principles may be well known to experienced designers, but may not be familiar to the general population.

  4. Understanding Design Principles • They are not scientific principles, such as the laws of motion or thermodynamics, but are derived from practice or pragmatism. • They are the substance of professional engineering judgment.

  5. Three Important Principles • All design begins with a clearly defined need. (Need) • All design arises from a creative response to a need. (Vision) • All designs result in a system, product or project that meets the need. (Delivery)

  6. Need, Vision, and Delivery • New technologies create new processes. • The stability of a technological system is influenced by all of the components in the system, especially those in the feedback loop. • Research and development is a specific problem-solving approach that is used intensively in business and industry to prepare devices and systems for the marketplace.

  7. The Design Process • The design process includes defining a problem, brainstorming, researching and generating ideas, identifying criteria and specifying constraints, exploring possibilities, selecting an approach, developing a design proposal, making a model or prototype, testing and evaluating the design using specifications, refining the design, creating or making it, and communicating processes and results.

  8. The Design Process • Management is the process of planning, organizing, and controlling work. • Mathematics, creativity, logic, and originality are all needed to improve technology. • Technology usually affects society more directly than science because it solves practical problems and serves humans needs.
