  2. All About Mrs. Booth • I am excited to celebrate my 25th year in Council Rock by returning to the classroom this year! • Hillcrest -- Churchville --- Hillcrest • B.A.T. (Our Family’s Acronym) • Love being outdoors and going on adventures with my family!

Our Goals • To create a classroom environment in which students are comfortable and safe • To help students develop a love of learning and enhance self confidence and responsibility. • To find what works for ALL students so they can be happy and have a successful year in third grade! • To take children as far as they think they can go and beyond!!!!

  5. Our Schedule • 9:10  Morning Routines and Morning Meeting • 9:30  W.I.N. (What I Need) Intervention Time • 10:00 Math • 11:00 Recess (15 min.) • 11:15 Language Arts (included within this period will be snack, read aloud and/or silent reading) • 12:30 Recess • 1:00 Lunch • 1:30 Social Studies (M,W,F) Science (T,TH) • 2:10  Language Arts ( we will copy homework and pack up before specials) • 2:50  Specials  (M-Music, T-Computer, W-Library, TH-Gym, F-Art) • 3:40 Dismissal

  6. Math • enVision Math Spiral Curriculum, a lot of new material building upon familiar concepts • Quizzes, chapter tests, district tests, performance tasks • Purposeful homework will reinforce what was learned in school

Math • Packet – • “Lives” in math pocket of binder • Please don’t work ahead • Parent letter/vocab cards/useful tools • Resources on the internet (mozillafirefox)– for review and practice (link and tutorial are on my website) • www.pearsonsuccessnet.com • Visual Bridge, e-tools, games • Online student text • Access practice pages

Language Arts • Reading • Reading Logs – • Children will create reading goals for home reading-these will be teacher monitored • Encourage a balanced reading genre (magazines, news articles, chapter books, they are ALL reading) • Come prepared each day with a “just-right” book • School Library • Classroom Library • Scholastic Book Orders

  9. Language Arts • Comprehensive targeted approach - instruction in Vocabulary, Comprehension, Fluency, Phonics, Grammar, Spelling, and Writing • Whole group and small group instruction • Comprehension “checks” • Weekly homework assignment to reinforce skills

  10. Spelling • Weekly Spelling Lists • Pre-tests Fridays, Tests the following Thursday • Packets (usually 3 – 4 pages) should be completed neatly and handed in by Thursday • Studying is encouraged

  11. Language Arts - Writing • Narratives, friendly letters, directions/ instructions, research, persuasive writing, poetry • Graded on Focus, Organization, Style, Content, and Conventions

  12. Science • 3 main topics • Motion and Matter • Sound • Plants • STEM activities • Group Work • Teacher prepared quizzes, performance tasks, and lab reports • Field Trip TBD - more information to follow

  13. Social Studies • Scholastic News - Current Events • Topics • Communities • Government • Geography • Citizenship • Biographies • Market Day in the spring to teach Economics • Biography Projects • Quizzes, chapter tests, quarterly tests, research projects

  14. Homework • Binders – Very Important, help teach organization THEY GO TO AND FROM SCHOOL EACH DAY • Please initial student planning page each night • We encourage parents to work with children and check to make sure HW is complete each night

  15. Homework 10 minutes x grade level = 30 minutes/night • Math(nightly M-Th) • Reading Logs (nightly) • Reading Response Activity – (Assigned Friday - Due Friday) • Spelling(Assigned Friday - Due Thursday) • Occasionally studying for science/social studies tests

  16. PSSA • April 1 - 5 (ELA) • April 8 - 12 (Math) • Reading and Math • Multiple choice and open-ended questions • Teach children test-taking strategies. • Look for practices and more information to be sent home in early 2019.

  18. Snack/Recess • Snack – We encourage healthy snacks. Only have about 10 minutes and will be a working snack so should be something quick and easy. • Re-usable water bottles (must seal tightly and go home each night) • Only water (no juice) • Recess is usually outside – students should dress for the weather

  19. Birthday, Parties, & Invitations • Students are welcome to bring in non-edible birthday treats to celebrate their birthdays. • Please do not bring birthday party invitations to school unless you plan to invite the entire class • 3 Parties - Halloween, December, Valentine’s Day • Pre-packaged, nut free items will be served at parties NO HOME BAKED ITEMS MAY BE ACCEPTED

  20. Absent Notes/ Tardiness • Please send in absent notes when your child is absent (HCE Homepage)- Beginning this year, you will receive an email stating your child’s absence. This is generated through HAC. You may respond directly to that email to report the reason for the absence. THIS MUST BE DONE WITHIN 3 DAYS OF THE ABSENCE. • Hillcrest emphasizes promptness. Children should be in their seats, “Ready to learn” by 9:10. • Parents should sign student in at the office if late.

  21. Communication • Sing up for BAND. (Communication APP Platform) • There is a sheet of paper on your child’s desk regarding this app. Please write down the email address you would like me to send the invitation to join so you can receive class notifications and reminders.

  22. Communication • Please contact us anytime. Email is quick and easy. Please give us 24 hours to return emails and phone calls. • Emergencies and late in the day dismissal changes should not be left on teacher voicemails or emails. Call the office and leave a message with them. • Placards for car riders (yellow – 2 on each page)!
