  3. Early Demands for Equality How did African Americans challenge segregation following World War II?

  4. Origin • Civil Rights Act of 1875 – Outlawed segregation in all public facilities BUT- later declared unconstitutional • Plessy v. Ferguson – 1896 the Supreme Court ruled segregation “separate but equal” • allowed segregation to extend into all aspects of life

  5. Segregation • Keeping the races apart • De jure segregation – by law • (Jim Crow) • De facto segregation – by unwritten customs or traditions
