Nomenclature of Saturated Hydrocarbons

Learn about the nomenclature of saturated hydrocarbons, specifically simple alkanes, and understand the I.U.P.A.C. rules for naming them. Discover how to identify the longest carbon chain, number the chain, name and number alkyl groups, handle multiple alkyl groups, and name halogens. Additionally, explore the naming of cycloalkanes.

  1. Nomenclature of Saturated Hydrocarbons

  2. Some Simple Alkanes (CnH2n+2)

  3. The n-alkanes

  4. Boiling points

  5. London Forces

  6. Alkyl Groups

  7. Classification of H’s & C’s

  8. The I.U.P.A.C. Rules • Find longest carbon chain • Number chain from end closest to nearest branch (with 2 different longest chains, use one with most substituents) • Give alkyl groups attached to the longest chain a name and a number • Multiple alkyl groups named alphabetically • Multiple groups that are the same: di(2), tri(3), tetra(4), penta(5), hexa(6) • Halogens are name “halo” groups – fluoro, chloro, bromo, iodo

  9. Find the longest chain with the greatest number of substituents

  10. Give the I.U.P.A.C. Nomenclature

  11. All are “pentanes”

  12. Cycloalkanes

  13. Name These
