  3. The Enlightenment was a period during the 1700s when people rejected traditional ideas and supported a belief in human reason.

  4. Philosophers of the Enlightenment were interested in changing people’s relationship with their government. VS.

  5. They believed that government decisions should be based on laws of nature and reason. U.S. Constitution

  6. Important philosophers of the Enlightenment included:

  7. 1. John Locke believed governments should protect people’s natural rights. Declaration of Independence

  8. 2. Jean-Jacques Rousseau believed the powers of governments should be derived from those who are governed.

  9. 3. Baron de Montesquieu believed in a separation of governmental powers.

  10. 4. Voltairebelieved in freedom of speech.

  11. As a result of their support of natural rights, Enlightenment philosophers helped encourage and spark the American and French Revolutions.
