  2. Building Safety Tornado: Go to floor below our classroom, sit in hallway Fire: Exit door of G171, Go Right, take stairs down, take left, leave building, stand by sand volley ball courts. Lock Down: Get out of view of window in door, sit quietly on the floor

  3. Classroom Safety If you cut yourself, see the instructor, we need to know. No eating in the lab area unless instructed to do so. If you break it, you pay for it and you clean it up Eye Wash: irritants that need removing from your eyes Chemical shower: For spills of irritating chemicals on one’s body..emergency only… never been used since I have been here. Fire extinguisher: If you know how to use one, and you feel like you can handle the situation, use it; if not leave the room and shut door behind you. Fire blanket: for smothering fires and warming possible shock victims

  4. Classroom cont. Respect : People, places and things---- Mutual If you used it, put it back….leave it better than you found it. Accidents will happen, Negligence is not tolerable. Do not fool around

  5. Lab Safety Goggles always on when fire or irritating chemicals are used at lab station No food, No tasting Hot glass looks like cold glass. Waft when smelling something Wipe down lab table with a wet paper towel, then use a dry paper towel

  6. Bunsen burner Safety

  7. Con’t. Hottest flame is when air vent is open. Coolest flame is when air vent is closed

  8. Turning off Burner • Turn off at gas source • Valve should be at 90 degrees left or right of where rubber tubing is attached • Never turn off at burner itself

  9. Lighting the burner • Make sure needle valve is turned in past the rubber “O” ring. • Bring match flame below top of the barrel, gas may blow out the lit match • Gas valve should be parallel to rubber hose attachment • Goggles ON!!!!!!!

  10. Bunsen con’t. • Watch for long hair • Watch for loose sleeves • Point heated test tube or glassware away from others at your table • Check rubber hose for rotting or deterioration • Dispose of matches in garbage after cooling, Sinks are not for matches!

  11. Shower and Eye Wash Shower is used in case of a chemical spill that is large. Dilute the concentration Eye wash is used to rinse out eyes if some irritant somehow gets in them.
