  3. Introduction • Globally, majority of studies on sexual behaviour focused on young people and adults with limited attention paid to the geriatrics. • Preliminary investigation suggests that elderly persons have reproductive health challenges including sexual dysfunction and engagement in risky sexual activities.

  4. Objectives • This study therefore determined the sexual practices and dysfunction among the geriatrics in Ibadan, Nigeria.

  5. Methodology • The study population consisted of 400 geriatrics aged 65> years who were selected using a multi-stage sampling technique. • A validated questionnaire designed from findings of six Focus Group Discussions (FGD) was used to obtain information from respondents. FGD data were recorded/transcribed/themes developed The questionnaire data were analysed using descriptive & inferential statistics.

  6. Findings • Respondents mean age was 70.8 (±7.58) years. • Slightly more than half (50.5%) were males. • A total of 76.2% males and 12.6% females had their last sexual intercourse 2 years preceding the study. • Few of the respondents had sex with persons other than their spouses since they attained the age of 65 years.

  7. Condom Use • Those who had extra-marital sex during this period, only very few (6.8%) used condom. • More males (11.9%) than females (1.5%) used condom during the last extra-marital sexual encounter (p<0.05). Low condom-use was attributed to negative perception to it.

  8. Sexual Perception • Majority (68.8%) agreed that sex with a virgin could serve as immunity against STIs/HIV; • Those who held this view were males (35.1%) and females (5.1%). • More males (56.4%) and females (66.7%) agreed that sex at elderly age has healing effects on the body system (p<0.05).

  9. Sexual Dysfunction • Early ejaculation and erectile dysfunction (31.3%) were males’ major sexual problems; • While inadequate vaginal lubrication (10.3%) and other menopausal changes (26.5%) were main sexual dysfunctions affecting the females.

  10. Conclusion • Elderly persons continue to show sexual interest but risky sexual activity is common among them.

  11. Recommendation • Therefore, health intervention programmes targeted at providing sexual and reproductive health services and geriatric education should be implemented for the elderly • Including Home-Based Counselling services tailored to meet their needs.
