Interactions and Modifications of Earth's Systems Due to Human Activity

Explore the relationships among Earth's systems and how human activity is modifying those systems. Discuss the negative consequences of human actions on the biosphere-atmosphere, atmosphere-cryosphere, cryosphere-hydrosphere, hydrosphere-biosphere, and geosphere-biosphere relationships. Learn about the causes of these modifications such as carbon emissions, deforestation, glacial melting, pollution, and overpopulation.

  1. Discuss the Relationships Among Earth’s Systems and How Those Systems are Being Modified Due To Human Activity By: Eglantina Brewer Chemistry 10-1

  2. OBJECTIVES

  3. The Destruction of Earth’s Systems • What is human activity? • Actions that people do that might have a negative consequence • Source of food supply • An energy source • Source of recreation and constructions • Major source of medicines • Natural resources for industrial products • Earth’s system can provide us humans with Desires/ Solutions • Destruction of the “pure” system

  4. Biosphere - Atmosphere • NATURAL: Biosphere releases carbon into the atmosphere through the biomass; therefore there is a small quantity of CO2 in the air • HUMANS: Interrupting this pure relationships by releasing more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere • Deforestation (eliminating carbonsinks)(construction) • Burning fossil fuels • Burn forests • Certain agricultural practices • Waste management • CAUSES: Global warming, change in the ecosystems, and acidification of the ocean

  5. Atmosphere - Cryosphere • NATURAL: The atmosphere provides the perfect conditions for the cryosphere to exist • HUMANS: Releasing a lot of carbon dioxide/ greenhouse gasses(methane, nitrous oxide, etc.) • 2/3rds of the current rates- glacial melting is due to human activity • 25% - 1851 to 2010 • 65% - 1991 to 2010 • Aerosols • CFC’s (coolants) • Eating meat • Production of cattle • CAUSES: • Global warming (greater impact) • Ocean Circulations are disrupted • Sea levels rise • Less habitat for the animals in the poles

  6. Cryosphere - Hydrosphere (minor) • CAUSES: • Change in temperature • More water in ocean • Greaterstorms (force) • Sea levelsrise • Overpopulation (central regions) • Floods (coastalregions) • http://ocean.nationalgeographic.com/ocean/critical-issues-sea-level-rise/

  7. Hydrosphere - Biosphere • NATURAL: Provides a habitat for many animals/ plants • Crucial sphere- benefits to humans and animals • HUMANS: Wastes • Grand quantity of litter • Excess of carbon • CAUSES: • Fish intoxicated • Human health • Resource of food • Decrease in result of animals/ plants • Ocean becomes acidic

  8. Geosphere - Biosphere • NATURAL: Geosphere provides pure soil when it comes to the formation of the biosphere • HUMANS: • Mining Extraction • Ore Extraction • Chemicals • Intoxication (pesticides/ fertilizers) • CAUSES: • Polluting our ecosystems • Natural Vegetation will be scarce • Biomass won’t develop properly • Loss in species

  9. Conclution • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfGMYdalCIU • Earth’ssystems are vital • Manywayshumans can decreasetheharmfulactivites • Consciousness • Beinginformed (consequences) • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eTCZ9L834s

  10. QUIZ TIME! • What were the five important relationships of shperes that I talked about?

  11. Answer #1 • Biosphere- Geosphere • Biosphere - Hydrosphere • Hysrosphere - Crynosphere • Atmosphere - Crynosphere • Biosphere - Atmosphere

  12. Q #2 • What are some human activities that are destroying the relationship between the geosphere and the biosphere? (Be specific)

  13. Answer #2 • Mining extraction • Ore extraction • Chemicals • Pesticides and Fertilizers

  14. Q #3 • What are the causes of human activity interfering with the relationship between the crynosphere and the hydrosphere?

  15. Answer #3 • Change in temperature • More water in ocean • Greater storms (force) • Sea levels rise • Over population (central regions) • Floods (coastal regions)

  16. Reflection Out-loud • Everyone has to come up with something they’ll do or stop doing to help decrease the impact on the relationship between spheres. • Explain which sphere you chose and what will you do.
