  1. Overview of Today’s Class • Review our last class • Discuss today’s concept: job skills • Activity – making a chart of skills that are “In Demand” • Review what we learned today

  2. Review: first class • Businesses • Profit • Entrepreneur • Advertising

  3. Review: last class • Resources • The three kinds of resources

  4. Today’s concept: job skills • We’re focusing on human resources, because that’s how we get jobs • Do you think all human resources are created equal? • One thing that makes people stand out to employers is their skills

  5. What skills should you pursue? • Things you enjoy • Things that are in demand • STEM is an acronym for some of the skills that are most valuable to businesses these days [poster]

  6. Supply and demand • We spoke about demand for skills • Demand also refers to the number of items consumers are willing and able to buy. • Kilt example • Pretend kilts cost $100 each • Pretend you each have $500 in your bank account • Pretend you like kilts!

  7. Supply • To economists, supply means how many of something business are willing and able to sell • Kilt example: • If it takes wool from three sheep to make one kilt • And you own a herd of 27 sheep • How many kilts will you supply (assuming you can sell them all at a profit)?

  8. Today’s Activity: “In Demand” • We’ll break into our groups • Each person will get their own sheet of stickers showing eight different jobs • Together we’ll read a description of each job • Then look at your chart. Each column lists one of the STEM skills • As a group, decide which of the fours skills is used by each job, going through one job at a time.

  9. “In Demand” continued • As a group, place your stickers in the appropriate columns. • For example, start with “small business owner.” If you decide that job uses all four skills, then you should each put your “small business owner” stickers in one of the columns • The result of this exercise will be a chart that shows which skills are most “in demand”.

  10. Summary • Skills • STEM • Supply and Demand
