  1. A CPD Needs Analysis Using E-KSF Bruce McCulloch

  2. Aims • To carry out an AHP CPD needs analysis using E-KSF • Identify the main training requirements of individual professions and AHPs as a group

  3. Method • Approval - Approval to undertake this trial was sought and granted by the NHS Shetland Clinical Governance Department • Training - Workshops were provided for all AHP staff and managers by the Staff Development Department in NHS Shetland. This provided staff with an introduction to the E-KSF package and how to submit a PDP

  4. Method Continued • Data collection - Under the report section on E-KSF data was extracted from all the PDPs submitted by AHPs to identify the main training needs for AHPs and profession specific groups. - Data was entered on to an Excel spreadsheet for analysis

  5. Results • Graph1 - Presents the breakdown of the 187 activities submitted by AHPs on to E-KSF. • Miscellaneous included profession or person specific activities in which no theme was identified. - Activities were included as not identified when the author could not clearly identify what the learning aim was from the Excel spread sheet.

  6. Graph 1 • Abbreviations -Clinical supervision (CS) -HPC CPD standards refresher (HPC) -Portfolio development (Port) -Reflective practice (RP) -Journal club (JC) -Staff development (SD) -Miscellaneous (Misc) -High dependency unit respiratory skills (Resp) -Activities not identified (NI)

  10. Discussion • AHP PEF workshops attendees 48 • Staff development attendees 43 • 36 could not be analysed due to lack of detail • Total of 187 PDPs submitted “Its all our responsibility to ensure we have PDPs with all the relevant information”

  11. Clinical supervision 12 PDPs Identified as a training need by physio, podiatry and OT Develop inter-professional education Develop professional skills and enhance patient care QIS visit request for a policy High dependency respiratory care 10 PDPs Physio only Largest group of AHPs On call service Lone working Long breaks between utilising these skills Swine flu Discussion

  12. Limitations • Not all PDPs were entered (eg Band 7/8 management centres) • IT skills of staff

  13. Conclusions • The use of E-KSF has facilitated the author undertaking a CPD needs analysis by providing useful data on PDPs for professional groups in which training requirements can be identified. • The main CPD themes found during this trial were clinical supervision for AHPs as a group and high dependency respiratory care for physiotherapists.

  14. Recommendations • It is all AHP staffs responsibility to ensure PDPs continue to be submitted and agreed using E-KSF. This will support departmental managers and the staff development department in identifying profession specific, professional groups and overall NHS Shetland organisational training needs. • AHP staff must ensure PDPs are completed on E-KSF with all the relevant details to provide robust data to support future CPD needs analysis.

  15. How did it support AHPs and AHP PEFs? • Support staff meeting HPC CPD standards • Impact on corporate training budget • Organisational awareness of training needs • Development of right skills

  16. How did it support AHPs and the AHP PEF? • Present data on request from senior management team (AHPs Staff Governance Action Plan) • Meet HEAT targets (100% of PDPs submitted)

  17. Thank you Any questions?
