Synagogue • The synagogue is the Jewish house of prayer and study • The rabbi is the religious leader and teacher of a congregation and reads from the Torah, leads the prayers and gives a sermon • Services are usually led by a cantor who leads the chanting of prayers and reads from the Torah scroll (sings the psalms). The cantor is a person with a good singing voice.

  3. The Ark • The Holy Ark is where the Torah Scrolls are kept. The Ark is the holiest place in the Synagogue • It is like a cupboard • Parochet- curtain hangs infront of the ark

  4. Star of David The six pointed star is an important Jewish symbol The Star of David will be seen inside and outside the synagogue

  5. pulpit The pulpit is where the Rabbi speaks to the congregation

  6. The tamid • This is a perpetual light, traditionally an oil lamp • Light is never allowed to dim or go out

  7. bimah • The raised platform from which the torah is read
