  1. Overview Thorium Cycle project Project FIKI-CT-2000-00042 ADOPT FUETRA - Meeting March 13 2002

  2. Outline • Why Thorium? • Goal of Thorium Cycle project • General project Info • Working Packages: • WP2 HFR irradiation (Schram, Conrad, Somers) • WP3 KWO irradiation (Sommer, Somers) • WP4 Full core PWR behaviour (Phlippen) ADOPT FUETRA - Meeting March 13 2002

  3. Why Thorium ? • 232Th + 1n - > 233Pa - > 233U • Relatively low waste production • Possibility for enhanced Pu burning • Low leaching rate of thorium oxide • Potential use as an “inert” matrix • Follow-up of 4th FWP on Thorium, see also the report Thorium as a waste management option, EUR 191142 EN, ed. Gruppelaar and Schapira ADOPT FUETRA - Meeting March 13 2002

  4. Goal of Thorium Cycle project To supply key data for application of Th-cycle • Behaviour of Th-based fuel at extended burnup • irradiation experiment of 4 targets to 55 MWd/kgHM • irradiation experiment of 1 target to 35 MWd/kg HM in PWR • Core calculations for Th-based fuel: • code-to-code validation • sensitivity check for significant isotopes 232Th and 233U • to gain accurate results for 80-100 MWd/kgHM for Pu/Th fuel ADOPT FUETRA - Meeting March 13 2002

  5. WP1: Co-ordination WP3: KWO Irradiation WP4: Full core PWR behaviour WP2: HFR Irradiation General Project Info • Budget : 2.7 MEURO • Duration : 48 months • Participants : BNFL, CEA, FZK, JRC-IE, JRC-ITU, KWO-Obrigheim, NRG • Time frame : 1/10/2000 - 1/10/2004 To 6th Framework program ADOPT FUETRA - Meeting March 13 2002

  6. Status of Thorium cycle project • Project is now running for 1.5 years • Irradiation in HFR ongoing • Irradiation in KWO ongoing First 13 deliverables are issued ADOPT FUETRA - Meeting March 13 2002

  7. Time Schedule 2001 2002 2003 2004 ADOPT FUETRA - Meeting March 13 2002
