NWS Mission The National Weather Service (NWS) provides weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy. NWS data and products form a national information database and infrastructure which can be used by other governmental agencies, the private sector, the public, and the global community

  8. Long-Fused Warnings/Advisories Small Craft Advisories - Winds of 21 to 33 knots - Seas of 6 to 7 feet or greater Gale Warnings - Winds of 34 knots to 47 knots (non-tropical) Storm Warnings - Winds of 48 knots or greater (non-tropical)

  9. Short-Fused Warnings/Statements Issued for short duration (< 3 hours) Special Marine Warning - Wind gusts to 34 knots or greater (convective) - Waterspouts Marine Weather Statements - Wind gusts of 25 to 33 knots (stand alone) - Add more information to an ongoing Special Marine Warning

  10. Surf Zone Forecast Nearshore Wave Height Forecast Rip Current Threat Winds and Weather Water Temperature

  11. Incident Response • Support NOAA HAZMAT -- Provide “Spot Forecasts” of winds, waves, and weather for hazardous material spills (Done for wildfires for a long time). -- Role in incidents likely increasing with time (ex. Columbia recovery support)

  12. Ocean Prediction Center - High Seas Text - North Atlantic/North Pacific - Offshore Waters Forecast - New England to Florida - Weather Fax Products - Surface and 500 mb Forecast to 5 Days - Sea State Analysis - Warnings – Gale, Storm, Hurricane Force

Tropical Prediction Center Tropical Cyclone Forecasts/Warnings (National Hurricane Center) Other Marine Forecasts for the Tropical Atlantic (Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch) - High Seas Text - Offshore Waters Forecast - Wind, Wave, and Surface Pressure Forecast - Sea State Analysis - Tropical Cyclone Danger Areas (in hurricane season) - High Wind/Wave Graphics (outside hurricane season)

The Future? - More accurate forecasts. - Increased resolution in space and time. - New communication methods for forecasts and warnings. - Additional graphic capabilities. - Integration of new science into the data collection and forecast process. - Continue to build partnerships to leverage resources for improved service.
