General information • In the 2ndcentury the Romans chose this place to settle here and created the city of Londinium. • London is situated on the river Thames which was useful for merchant ships and trading, and today the river is still important for transport and tourism. • The city of London is an important business and finance centre, and London has a huge influence on fashion, culture, politics, entertainment, media and sport across the UK and Europe. • London’s climate is generally mild and damp. • Summer Olympics games weretherein 2012.

The City ofWestminster • Palace of Westminster - seat of the House of Commons and House of Lords, two parts of the Parliament . • Big Ben - the great bell of the clock at the end of the Palace of Westminster, now officially called the Elizabeth Tower. • Westminster Abbey -Gothic cathedral dating from 11thcentury, burial place of kings, place of coronation of Kings and Queens. BuckinghamPalace • the official London residence and principal workplace of the British monarchy • built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1705 on a site which had been in private ownership for at least 150 years • became the official royal palace of the British monarch on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837 • the state rooms, used for official and state entertaining, are open to the public each year for most of August and September, as part of the Palace's Summer Opening Obr. 3

The Tower of London • Is a historic castle situated on the north bank of the Thames River. • Until the14th century royal residence, place of coronation of Kings and home of Crown Jewels. • In the 16th and 17th centuries the castle was used as a prison. • In the First and Second World Wars, the Tower was again used as a prison. • Today it is one of the most popular tourist attraction and there is a museum. Trafalgar square • The square consists of a large central area with roadways on three sides, and a terrace to the north, in front of the National Gallery. • National Gallery was founded in 1824, nowadays there is an art museum. • There are many statues and sculptures on the square. • Nelson's Column – guarded by 4 lions, was built to commemorate Admiral Nelson,who died at the Battle of Trafalgarin 1805.
