Activities in ICT (Continue) • EUROMED Connect: 45 Mps direct from London to Ramallah, completed Nov 2005 + Palestinian Academic Network (Partnership with universities) • Government Computer Center: It provide Internet Access Service, E-mail, Web-hosting, and .PS Domain registration service. www.gcc.gov.ps • Falastiniyeh Project: Developing ICT through women share in the ICT job market. It contains (training by employment, funding small projects for women).

  12. Cooperation between MOL and MTIT • Falastinya: 1000 women job opportunity • Partners for Temporary Employment: 10,000 job opportunity in private sector in both West Bank and Gaza: • supported by European Union and International Bank

  13. Why “Partners for Temporary Employment” Program? • Unemployed Registered Labors are 529,801: • West Bank: 266,220 • Gaza: 263,581 • Qualified Unemployed Registered Labors are 67,526 • West Bank: 31,737 • Gaza: 35,789

  14. Important Facts • Palestinian population: • West Bank: over 2.3 Million • Gaza: 1.3 Million • Palestinian Authority controls • 17.2% of the occupied West Bank (Divided into 13 non-contiguous reservations) • 80% of the occupied Gaza Strip

  16. Wall Effects: • 8,000 acres of land confiscated for wall construction. (Oct.2004) • Dividing cities, schools and homes. • 89.5% of Palestinian will be trapped inside the wall. • 280,000 of Palestinian will be separated from their land.

Important Facts (Continue) • Closure problems • Economic Loss because of Israeli occupation since 2000 until September 2005 is $15,633,700,000. • Number of families that lost half of it’s income within Intifada 54%. • 67% of Palestinians are living under Poverty line • Most of the 99,000 Palestinian labor in the Israeli Market lost their job after 2000 (Intifada). • Military Check points and backstop

  19. How ? Within This Life, Occupation, Daily Loss, The Question is How can we use ICT to communicate at least?

Government operation/ Solutions: • West Bank (WB) and Gaza are separated • Functions are divided between WB and Gaza • Connections between WB and Gaza use Israeli networks • Limited wireless communication frequencies between WB & Gaza • Most offices and ministries have video conferencing facilities • Internet connections (unfortunately no high speed connections)

  23. Conclusion Technology is not the only support issue for Palestinians community but it provides a breathing window for many Palestinians during closures
