  1. Bell Vocabulary 4.1 • ebullient adj. Showing enthusiasm or exhilaration of feeling • effluvium n. A noxious or ill-smelling exhalation from decaying or putrefying matter • elocution n. The art of correct intonation, inflection, and gesture in public speaking or reading

  2. Bell Vocabulary 4.2 • encomium n. A formal or discriminating expression of praise • equivocate v. To use words of double meaning • evanesce v. To vanish gradually

  3. CH 19 Argumentation-Persuasion • Not just a POV • Not just evidence • Address opposing viewpoints and pick a side. • Logos, pathos, ethos- the amount used is dependent upon audience

  4. How does it work? • To be effective, Persuasive speech must appeal to the both the mind and emotions of the audience • They must think the argument is important enough for them to care

  5. Assess your audience • Supportive? • Hostile? • Fence sitters? • What does your audience already know/feel about your topic? • Chose a topic in which you feel strongly about • Determine your purpose- action? Change their beliefs?

  6. Persuasive pre-write • Identify the controversy • Offer strong ,credible evidence (stats, facts, experts?, interviews?) • Schmooze your audience, don’t insult. • Be organized • Acknowledge different viewpoints • Understanding • Validity • Common ground

  7. Types of Appeals to the Audience • Logical Appeals (logos) • Based on a set of assumptions • “ all men are created equal” • The writer MUST explain or justify the assumption

  8. Ethical appeals (ethos) Based on SHARED moral values to call upon a sense of virtue or justice Emotional (pathos) Are often based on suffering or potential threats Emotional appeals tend to use “loaded” language that gives a visual or graphic image

  9. Now that you know Ethos, Pathos and Logos….. • ….. For extra thought… who can identify Porthos, Athos and Aramis?......... One more chance… Name number four…..One FINAL opportunity… who was the creator of all four?

  10. More pre-write strategy • Provide Evidence that refutes opposition • Be specific and avoid generalizations • Toulmin logic- Claim/Data/Warrant • Use data to support your thesis and justify an action • Beware of Fallacies

  11. Why do we bother???? • This is what makes (or breaks) a speech or paper. • This is how you will be expected to write for research and literary analysis papers. • THIS IS WHAT COLLEGE WILL EXPECT!

  12. Let’s practice • With your circle • classify each audience • Choose 5 ideas to support the thesis based upon each audience • Examine 3-5 potential counter arguments you may have.

  14. Turn in the draft from your Narrative essay. Grab handout and begin reading after your Bell Vocab 4.3 • execration n. An accursed thing • exigency n. A critical period or condition • fungible adj. That may be measured, counted, or weighed

  15. Assess writer’s credibility/bias from the author’s background.Identify the thesisIdentify three points of evidence used to support the thesis. How/Do they address opposition?What persuasive techniques are used to engage the audience? Are they effective? Explain.

  17. Beware! • Repeats? • Coherency? • Transitions? • Order? • Too much background? • Title? • Citations?- ok to not have in draft but acknowledge need

  19. Essay Criteria! • Topic is from instructor list- no changing once draft is complete • 1000-1500 words (not counting works cited) • 3-5 sources • MLA format • Typed final copy to turnitin.com • Hand written draft + signed peer review done in class
