What is assessment
What is Assessment?

  • The process of identifying what students know and are able to do

  • The most common form of feedback is assessment

  • An “assessment” occurs any time a teacher gathers information on student learning

What do the experts say about assessment

  • “Student achievement benefits when assessments are given relatively frequently as opposed to infrequently.”

    (Bangert-Drowns, J. Kulik, C. Kulik)

  • “Properly executed assessments can be an effective tool for enhancing student learning.”

    (Robert Marzano)

  • “Informative assessment isn’t an end itself, but the beginning of better instruction.”

    (Rick Stiggins)

Student-Generated Assessment

Obtrusive Assessment

  • A teacher focusing on basketball asks students to demonstrate the proper execution of a free throw.

  • During a basketball scrimmage, the teacher observes students’ form as they shoot free throws.

  • A student approaches the PE teacher and tells Mrs. Reeder that he’s been working on his free throw form at recess and at home. Could she come watch him shoot 10 free throws on the playground and assess him on his free throw form?
