Western Territory • By 1800 Americans are moving west across the Appalachians in large wagons called Conestogas. • Spain controls all land west of the Mississippi River including New Orleans. • New Orleans is a vital trading center at the mouth of the Mississippi River. • 1802 Spain closes New Orleans to the U.S. & gives the Louisiana Territory to France. • Jefferson sent a delegation to France to buy New Orleans for $10 million. • The French leader Napoleon refuses and offers to sell the entire Louisiana Territory to the U.S. • Why? • Efforts to rebuild French empire in North America were ruined by a slave revolt on the island of Haiti led by TouissantLe'overture

Louisiana Purchase • Problem: Constitution doesn’t grant president the right to buy land. • Solution: It does give him the power to negotiate treaties. • 1803 - Jefferson negotiates a treaty to buy the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million dollars doubling the size of the country.

Lewis & Clark Expedition • 1804 - Jefferson sends a group led by Meriwether Lewis & William Clark to explore the newly purchased land. • With the help of Sacagawea, a Shoshone Indian woman, they spend the next 3 years exploring the Louisiana Purchase. • They return with info. about the people, plants, and geography of the West.   5. IV. Zebulon Pike • Zebulon Pike • 1805 - Leads expedition to explore the upper Mississippi River Valley • 1807 – Leads second expedition to explore present-day Colorado
