  3. Short-Term Missions - Research • Surveyed students from 48 seminaries (1935 total surveys, 1375 from MDiv students) • Also surveyed Christian college students for a total sample of 5,270.

  4. Short-Term Missions - Results • 1.5 million Americans on STM each year. • 51% of all MDiv students . Similar % for undergraduate students (30-70% range) • Median cost of a STM trip is between $1000-$1500. • Length of trip: • 11% 1-6 days • 27% 7-9 days • 34% 10-14 days • 15% 15-30 days

  5. Short-Term Missions - Results • Mexico clearly the #1 destination (more than 25% of total trips) • Other top 10 destinations: • Dominican Republic • Canada • Honduras • Jamaica • Guatemala • UK • Costa Rica • China • Peru

  6. Short-Term Missions - Results • Only 13% go to a country within the 10/40 window. • 3.5% travel to the least evangelized world (World A). • 12.5% travel to the somewhat evangelized (World B). • 84% travel to the most evangelized (World C).

Short-Term Missions - Results • “There is a marked divide between scholars and practitioners, between missiology and short-term mission.” • “STM leaders often avoid missiology, and missiologists avoid STM.” • “There has been a failure on the part of missiologists to recognize the strategic value of working closely with this new movement.”
