  4. Joy - happiness • “Don’t worry, be happy.” • Can’t be happy all the time • Happiness depends on what happens, but God never changes! • NOT rejoice in circumstances but rejoice in the Lord and because God never changes – Rejoice evermore! • “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Phil.4:4

  5. Joy vs Happiness

  6. Joy - happiness • Nothing wrong with happiness, but happiness works best when rooted in JOY. • Joy is NOT dependent on happiness • Joy function even better when happiness is taken away • It’s cruel to say to people in sorrow, “smile and be happy.”

  7. Joy - happiness • Isa. 53:3 “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.” • Jesus was a man of sorrow, but he is also annointed with oil of gladness above they fellows.

  8. Joy - happiness “You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.” Ps.45:7 “You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.” Heb.1:9

  9. Joy – why is it important? 1. To win people to Christ Ps.51:12-13 “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.”

  10. Joy – why is it important? 2. To live as Christians Neh.8:9 “ Nehemiah said, "Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORDis your strength."

  11. Joy – three Ingredients • A Cleansed Life: Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have access by faith into his grace wherein we stand and rejoice (bermegah). Joy comes from having peace with God Joy comes by the grace of the Lord (Brings justification)

  12. Joy – three ingredients • Justification – reckoned (an accounting term) to us • Rom.4:22 - Hal ini diperhitungkan • 22This is why "it was credited to him as righteousness.“ • Ledger book • Left side : all your vile thoughts, words and deeds • Right side : paid in full

  13. Joy – three ingredients • When that happens, we are clean • When we’re clean, we have this great joy • Luke 10:20 “don’t be happy that demons submit to you, but rejoice that your name is written in heaven.” • What can take JOY away? SIN • Ps.51:12 “Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation.” • Nothing done on you can take your joy!

  14. Joy – three ingredients • If you want to know a person, don’t watch his actions, but his reactions. • Actions can be planned. • Mat.5:11-12 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad because great is your reward in heaven.” • But if my reaction is bad, it takes my joy.

  15. Joy – three ingredients 2. Confidence Rejoice in Hope (pengharapan) = confidence based on the Word. Hope: no matter what happens Rom.8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, whohave been called according to his purpose.”

  16. Joy – three ingredients • 2 Cor.7:4 “I am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulation.” • Di rampok? Ibr.10:34 “ketikahartamudirampas, menerimahalitudengansukacita • Heb.10:34 “You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.

  17. Joy – three ingredients • House burnt down? • If you got your joy from your house you wouldn’t still have joy. • But if you got your joy from the Lord, you still have Him – you still have the joy. • Never said rejoice in your house!

  18. Joy – three ingredients 3. Communication Rom.5:11 “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” Phil.4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

  19. Joy – three ingredients • John 15:11 “These things have I spoken unto you that my joy might remain in you and that your joy maybe full.” • John 17:13 "I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.” • To rejoice is a choice; and it begins by choosing Jesus!
