  1. Reflection on Persuasive Essay “Play it again, Sam.” Or If I could do it all over again…

  2. The “How To” of Reflection • Students will receive their persuasive papers back, and they will take a few minutes to review. • Students will need a clean sheet of paper and a blue or black pen. (Hopefully, all good little boys and girls received one in their stocking.) HA! • Students will write a one-page reflection answering all of the questions on the next slide. These questions will require students to reflect on their writing ability, prewriting, the time devoted to the writing process, and the editing and revision process.

  3. Reflection Format • Answer all questions in complete sentences. • Write in essay form using paragraphs to divide ideas, and make sure you begin each paragraph with a topic sentence. • Topic sentences state the idea which will be discussed in the paragraph. The topic sentence is an introduction, and then you support the idea with supporting detail. You may restate the questions as topic sentences.

  4. REFLECTION QUESTIONS • How do you feel you could have improvedyour persuasive essay? (Remember – all papers are final drafts and every paper could be improved.) • Go back and review your self-edit sheet and answer the following question. Were you honest in answering your revision questions? • Were there any revision questions which you answered “yes,” but you still missed points? BE HONEST! If so, how will you correct this next time?

  5. REFLECTON QUESTIONS CONT’D • What is it about this paper that makes you the most proud? Explain using examples. • What is it about this paper that you would change if you had the opportunity. (Don’t worry…we do not have time to revise it, so just think about it and give a good reflective answer). • Would you rate this assignment on a scale from 1-10 as a snoozer, or extremely difficult? (1-least to 10-most) • How prepared were you to write this paper? List the materials given to you (handouts, rubrics, powerpoints, etc. ) to prepare you for this assignment. Did this information help you, or overwhelm you?

  6. REFLECTION QUESTIONS CONT’D • Please give me some feedback for next year. What would you change about this assignment that might make it easier, or better for students next year? • NOW…Here is the fun part! I am always in the grading seat, but now the tables have been turned and you possess the almighty red pen! What is my grade for preparing you, explaining the assignment to you, and giving you the needed resources to help you through this assignment? (A-F) Give me honest comments on how I could do a better job helping you to succeed. • This assignment is due today, so think, write, and produce a reflection that you will be proud to place in your portfolio.
