  4. OHIO SPECIAL RESPONSE TEAM • Overview • Actual situations may required variations • to the guidelines provided. • Judgment must be used at all times. • If a OSRT member finds the human remains, notify civil authorities. • If the civil authorities are present, they will • determine how the human remains should • be processed.

  5. OHIO SPECIAL RESPONSE TEAM • General Guidelines • 1. First determine if the remains are animal or human. • 2. If human remains, the authorities on location will determine how to proceed. • 3. Treat as crime scene unless informed otherwise. • 4. Consider covering the human remains: • Condition of the remains. • Individuals present are not part of the search operation. • Environmental conditions – weather, etc. may adversely effect the remains.

  6. OHIO SPECIAL RESPONSE TEAM • If the remains are scattered – try to mark the locations using colored tape or some other method. • Normally the remains should not be handled; however, there may be situations that require the remains to be moved: • Brushfires • Flooding • Scavengers (animals) • The civil authorities should provide directions on whether or not to move the remains. • If a camera is available take pictures before moving the remains. • Secure the camera – only release the pictures to the proper authority. • The first priority, in the event of an environmental hazard, is the safety of our members.

  7. OHIO SPECIAL RESPONSE TEAM IF REQUIRED TO ASSIST Wash your hands and other exposed skin surfaces with soap and water or equivalent immediately and thoroughly after contact with human remains, blood, or body fluids.
