Understanding Screening • Screening=A brief process for identifying the needs of a youth. • Screening is short-term, tentative identification of potential problem • No special training (or minimal training) is required to administer screening tools • Screening helps to: • Identify and triage mental health/substance abuse and other psychosocial problems among youth • Identify youth who need a more comprehensive review to identify the problem

Understanding Assessment and Assessment Domains • Assessment=Comprehensive review of information to determine needs and construct plans for longer-term care • Assessment can refer to: • Risk/protective factor assessment • Mental health assessment • Substance abuse assessment (typically included with mental health assessments for adolescents) • Educational needs • Individual and family service need assessments • Medical needs

Assessment Inventory • What is the purpose? • Identify duplications of effort in use • Strengthen effective use of assessments to assigns programs & services • Opportunities exist to develop tools in common • Chances to create new assessment methodologies • How might the inventory be illuminated/enhanced? (Questions to be asked) • What decisions are the tools to guide or facilitate? • What population or problem is the target of their use? • What tools do both systems use? • Do the data collected by different tools from each system overlap? • How are the assessment tools used? • - To classify children? • - To conduct individualized assessments? • - To make dispositional recommendations to the court? • To plan for services? • Source: CWLA Guidebook for Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare System Coordination and Integration

Coordinated Assessment • Option 1: Coordinate across agencies to design a process and select compatible tools that will be used to achieve a comprehensive case plan • Option 2: Coordinate across agencies to design a process by which the results produced by current tools can be translated into comprehensive case plans
