  2. L.A.S.E.R. – Light Amplification! • LASER, acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Lasers are machines that amplify light… usually they amplifyinfrared or ultraviolet light.

  3. Light Amplifier! • Think of an AMPLIFIER for your guitar, bass, or microphone; they AMPLIFY the sound and make it much louder and more POWERFUL! Lasers are like light amplifiers; they make the light more powerful and intense…. just like your guitar amp makes the SOUND much more powerful and loud.

  4. Difference between amp and laser… • A guitar amp will work with a huge RANGE of notes, scales, tones, etc., kind of like how light has many different colours. • LASERS use only ONE “note” or ‘colour’ and amplify it.

  5. These light rays are NOT parallel. • Lasers work so well because they can concentrate a HUGE amount of energy into a narrow, focused beam of light… all going in ONE direction. Rays of light.

  6. In a laser, all the rays are grouped together (parallel) and travelling in ONE direction!

  7. How are lasers used? • Lasers have been used to drill holes in diamonds, to cut metal for tools, to make micro-computer parts (very small computer parts) and electronics…

  8. How are lasers used? • To cut fashion patterns, to synthesize (make) new material, and to help with scientific research, communication, medicine, the military, and arts.

  9. Medical lasers • Lasers can be used to slice/cut the skin like a knife for surgery or to help SEAL (close) a cut or wound. Medical lasers can cut and cauterize (burn) the skin VERY QUICKLY, without damaging the surrounding healthy tissues.

  10. Medical lasers • They can be used to destroy CANCER cells, without hurting the normal healthy cells nearby!

In the future, laser sensors and laser communication systems could help cars drive by themselves!!
