Brock’s Personal Development Changes to My Coaching Style Season Update N.C.I. Diploma Program Fall 2005
Simplifying My Life • I have integrated most of what I do: • N.C.I. Diploma Program • Teacher’s College • Coaching • Statistics • Website • I am happier because I am making progress BROCK BOURGASE NCI - ONTARIO
Positive Changes • Asking “Why?” (instead of only “How?”) • Sharing tips and strategies with other coaches • Looking at the big picture (beyond sport) • Each week, I come closer to delivering the elite experience I want to provide for my athletes BROCK BOURGASE NCI - ONTARIO
Nutrition • Mindful of the influence of nutrition on energy levels • Encourage players to replenish energy stores after practice • Help players make healthy choices • Make resources available to players BROCK BOURGASE NCI - ONTARIO
Energy Systems • Meet the basic needs: • High School students do not get enough sleep • Fatigue and illness obvious in body language • Include Energy Systems on practice plans • Test to monitor improvement • Sport Specific (Agility Tests, Sargeant Jump) • General Fitness (Leger Test) BROCK BOURGASE NCI - ONTARIO
Physical Performance Factors • Focus on footwork • Consistency • Shoot the same shot every time • Build sport specific strength and speed • “Game Intensity” • Benchmarking BROCK BOURGASE NCI - ONTARIO
Season Update • Boys Volleyball Team qualified for OFSAA • Played exhibition season short-handed • Several practices cancelled due to gym space • The Athletic Director has caused a lot of red tape • Current team focus: • Raising our intensity in practice and games BROCK BOURGASE NCI - ONTARIO
My Feelings About This • “For whatever reason, this happened. Let’s get ourselves ready to go out and finish strong.” • Ron Zook • When confronted by adversity I only know how to persevere • An article about Hubie Brown and his passion for coaching was personally energizing BROCK BOURGASE NCI - ONTARIO
What’s Next? • Frustration aside, I still love coaching • Looking forward to the rest of the season • Investigating founding my own basketball club • Midget/Juvenile Boys • Trying hard to get back into the C.I.S.. • It’s a level that is a better fit for me than high school BROCK BOURGASE NCI - ONTARIO
Closing Thought “But in the end, it’s you against your standards; if you hit that mark, you can live with what everybody else thinks.” Ralph Wiley BROCK BOURGASE NCI - ONTARIO
