  1. The Importance of being X Alex AS

  2. Alex

  3. Observations

  4. Anxiety • Overloading & time out • Sensitivities • temperature, • noise, • colour, • texture • ‘Clocking out’

  5. Traits • Literal meaning • “Pull your socks up” • Habits • Stones in a row – 1 for each trip “That’s really good, perhaps we could...”

  6. Who to tell? Important to just be Alex

  7. How AS ‘felt’ • I experienced it as a barrier • It is invisible • Could be isolating • Was NOT a block to my emotions, even if I struggled to understand them

  8. Experimenting with understanding • Interacting and picking apart social situations • Safe place to be yourself, to try and fail. • ‘Eureka moments’ • My learning wasn’t that different. Drama

  9. Do you know how much you do? • When talking take a moment to think about why you say what you say • In my experience, by picking apart how you interact you can better help those with relational difficulties

  10. Counselling • Became interested in supporting roles due to help received when I was young. • Made empathy my “specialist subject” • Real life and Degree learning side by side. • Post-graduate course

  11. Others expectations • Counselling session

  12. Sense of self • AS is a PART of me • The label, double edged. • How others perceive my label • The mixed nature of becoming ‘functional’

  13. Social acceptance of AS • I’d like to talk to you about glasses

  14. Thank you • Any questions?
