  4. Flesh Using imagery, metaphors, and strong details add color!

  5. Imagery • Evokes mental images not just visually, but emotionally & sensationally. • Uses similes, metaphors, and personification.

  7. Metaphor • Saying one object is another, to imply that one thing has the characteristics of another. • Adds color, attractiveness, and makes a piece livelier and more vivid.

  8. Metaphor • Keep it simple! • “He’s the Bill Gates of Internet marketing” paints a clear picture of an extremely successful Internet marketer. • Tells a story in a pint-size package.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly • Should be original & fitting: • Good metaphor: “My books are water; those of the great geniuses are wine -- everybody drinks water.” – Mark Twain • STOP the clichés !--unimpressive: • Bad metaphor: “loud and clear” “step out of the box” “any friend of yours is a friend of mine” • UGLY: “Live life in the fast lane”

  11. Make sense! • Does this make sense? “Black as blueberries.” No, it doesn’t. Since when were blueberries black? • Try this: “Cold as ice.” Obviously, ice is cold. Yes, even dry ice is cold. Perfect sense!

  12. Song Lyrics • Comparing lyrics in songs: • BAD- Drake “Successful”: “The game needs change and I'm the motherfucking cashier” • GOOD- Bob Marley “Could You Be Loved”: “The road of life is rocky and you may stumble too, So while you point your fingers someone else is judging you”
