  1. Greek VolutesA spiral scroll-like ornament such as that used on an Ionic capital.

  2. Create a Greek style krater with volute handles.Design must contain red and black sgraffito. • Structure will be in 4 parts. Body, neck, volute handles, foot. • Body ( a draped bowl ) built up with coils. • Neck- a cylinder slab. • Volutes handles-thick slabs or coils bent into a swirl. • Foot- layered slabs or hollowed out upside down pinch pot.

  3. Sgraffito- means to scratch in Italian.The application of a different color slip over a leatherhard piece. Let the slip get leatherhard and draw or “scratch” the slip away. Usually a red clay vessel and white slip application or the opposite.

  4. Sgraffito design requirements • Design must contain lines • Design CANNOT contain symbols ( peace signs, hearts, etc.),no existing imagery (cartoons, etc. ) • Design can be abstract. • Design must appear on the entire plate. • Design must contain pattern. • Design should be inspired by a Greek style meander. • You will use a red slip application and carve out when leatherhard. You may also use black underglaze.
