  1. Parables • Assignment: Read Matthew 20: 1-16 • How would you feel when “pay time” came and you were on the 6 am shift? How would you feel if you were on the 5pm shift? • Is the landowner’s unjust, generous or both? In what ways does God seem unfair in your life? • In what ways does he seem generous?

  2. Parables

  3. Parables The word parable means, “a placing of one thing beside another” for the purpose of comparison.

  4. Defining a Parable • A fictitious, verbal, or written, but lifelike story told to illustrate a fact or truth. • A metaphor or a simile drawn from life or nature, which captures out interests and leaves us just enough confused and teased to think deeply about what it exactly means for our lives.

  5. Defining a Parable • A dramatic form of theological language that compels us to make a response, because it reveals the nature of the kingdom of God, and how a child of the kingdom should act • A story intended to convey a religious truth or particular teaching through the use of metaphors.

  6. Parables • A parable communicates insight about God, God’s kingdom, how people in God’s kingdom should be and the response expected of those that hear the story. • A parable compares one thing to another. In the Gospels, they are specifically used to compare some aspect of common everyday life with some reality of God’s kingdom.

  7. Parables Call for a Response • Their intent is to reveal something about the kingdom of God and to call the hearer to respond to Jesus and his mission. • They call the listener to decide how they will live in light of the presence of God in their midst. • They have a twist that would have been totally unexpected to its hearers, and would have disturbed their assumptions about the way things are.

  8. Parables Call for a Response • They were designed to make the hearers of the parable very uncomfortable • In Jesus’ parables the ordinary has gone askew and thereby shocks us into realizing that the parables lead us into another way of thinking about life.

  9. “Do not conform yourself to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”

  10. Parables • How would you feel when “pay time” came and you were on the 6 am shift? • How would you feel if you were on the 5pm shift? • Is the landowner’s unjust, generous or both? • In what ways does God seem unfair in your life? In what ways does he seem generous?
