  2. What is a Prostate • Prostate is a gland that is found only in males. • Its about the size of a walnut • The male prostate is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. • The tube that carries urine (urethra) runs through the prostate

  3. Prostate Cancer • Prostate cancer usually occurs in males over the age of 45 • Prostate cancer is the second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer-related deaths among men • There is no way to detect this disease early on

Prostate Cancer inAfrican American Males • African American males have the highest rate of prostate cancer in the world and the lowest rate of survival • Black men in America are 1.5 times as likely to develop prostate cancer and are 2 to 3 times as likely to die from the disease than white men

  5. Symptoms • A weak flow of urine • Frequent urination (especially at night) • Pain or burning sensation during urination • Blood in the urine or semen • Constant pain in the back, hips, or pelvis • Painful ejaculation

  6. Detection • Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) • Transrectal Ultrasound • Transrectal Biopsy • Transperineal Biopsy

  7. Treatments • Watchful waiting • Surgery • Radiation therapy • Hormone therapy
