  1. Installation of Arsenic & Iron Removal Plant 1036 no. Budarurtup LP School, Barpeta

  2. The rising concern for safe drinking water Barpeta has been facing a problem of Arsenic free drinking water in certain pockets of the district. The Public Health Engineering (PHE) department had already detected presence of Arsenic in 121 habitations, and new locations have come up in tests. In the head quarter Barpeta Town itself, Arsenic has been reported in 7 Hatis (Wards) out of 22 wards

  3. Search for solution The need of the hour was a new low cost technology for households to achieve Arsenic free water, a technology which was economically viable, and practically implementable. Search results ended in adopting an Arsenic and Iron Removal Plant (AIRP), designed by a UK based company (Practical Action Pvt. Ltd.) and already successfully installed in Bangladesh

  4. Basic structure of the AIRP • Water plays in a four-chamber plant. • Contaminated water enters the first chamber and spreads through the perforations of the inlet pipe, which aerates the water. • In the aeration process, oxygen from the air reacts with Iron and Arsenic in the water, which converts the water soluble Arsenic and Iron into insoluble compounds. • These insoluble compounds then precipitate out. • Water is then filtered in second and third chambers and received in fourth chamber.

  5. COST The Plant costs around Rs. 30-35,000 and is very cost effective.

  6. The plant

  7. Constructing the plant Site selection Maintenance of the plant The site for the AIRP should be near the tube well yielding water contamination with arsenic and iron. The plant should be located on flood-free high land. There should be proper drainage facilities /opportunities. The plant should be located in a place easily accessible by the community. Regularly clean the outer sides / periphery of the plant and ensure that it is free from water logging. Keep the plant covered with the CI/Plastic sheet. Keep the outlet pipes closed. After a 7 days interval flush out the water (opening the outlets) 2 or 3 times and clean the chambers.

  8. Results A 70 to 75 percent reduction in Arsenic achieved, thus bringing the level to below the acceptable and permissible levels.

  9. Performance report of AIRP constructed at 1036 No. Budarurtup LP School.Date of Installation of AIRP-30/10/2013 Raw & treated water quality collected from Tara hand pump and tested at DLL, Barpeta *** Differentiation of Water Sample Test Result for Arsenic above due to Mechanical error of Instrument & Mainly Time Factor i.e gap period in between Water Sample Collected & Test Accorded.

  10. Evaluation & Results Though the Plant has been installed in the said LP School, almost 10-15 households of this locality are regularly taking drinking water from it. Survey shows,12 households of the locality draw water from sources contaminated by high percentage of Iron, almost 3.5 to 5.00 ppm. Now these localities are taking 20 – 40 litres of drinking water daily from this Plant. An awareness has been created in the locality of Budarurtup and demanded have started rising from several parts of the district for similar installations.
