  2. Where does chocolate come from ? • Actually, chocolate grows on trees! • It all starts with a small tropical tree, the Theobroma cacao, usually simply called 'cacao' (pronounced ka-kow). • Theabroma is Greek for 'food for Gods'. • Cacao is native to Central and South America, but it is grown commercially throughout the Tropics. • About 70% of the world's cacao is grown in Africa. • A cacao tree can produce close to 2000 pods a year. The football shaped pod of the fruit grows out of branches and, oddly, out of the trunk of the tree. • The pods, also, have a sweet, sticky white pulp which is, also, eaten and used to make drinks. • The seeds are incredibly bitter - not at all like the chocolate that comes from them.

  4. How is chocolate made? In 1828 a dutchman took cocoa butter from the cocoa bean. When mixed with sugar, the result was a sweet tasting drink. This process is known as the 'Van Houten Process'. The first people to make and sell a chocolate bar in the U.K where in Bristol in 1847. In 1875, a swiss companyalso used the 'Van Houten' process to make and sell chocolate. Although lots of chocolate is now made, it is still a complicated process.

  8. Fair trade Did you know that some children have to work as slaves in cocoa farms in West Africa. Also, massive areas of rainforest have been destroyed through cocoa farming. We know how important it is that farmers are given a FAIR PRICE for what they grow. If cocoa farmers are given a fair price, they will not have to try to grow cocoa as cheaply as possible. There are 33 shops and companies in this country who sell fairtrade chocolate including ASDA, Marks and Spencer, Waitrose and Tesco. FAIR TRADE SAVING THE FARMERS EVERY DAY!
