  2. Instructions Regarding Our Singing • (Eph 5:18-21) “ 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

  3. Instructions Regarding Our Singing • (Col 3:16-17) “ 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

  4. Instructions Regarding Our Singing • These Verses Tell Us: • What to Sing: • Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs • How to Sing: • Filled with the Spirit – Word of Christ dwelling in us richly • With thankfulness in our hearts – Making melody in our hearts • Why to Sing: • Practical Reasons • Typical Reasons

  5. What? • Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs • Three terms used to represent one genre of songs • Songs of PRAISE and WORSHIP to God • Not for Entertainment: • Although we must enjoy it • How do we create congregational enjoyment? • Not by changing the genre of songs • But by changing our attitude towards Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs

  6. How? • Filled with the Spirit • Word of Christ dwelling in us richly • Parallel in Meaning • Word of Christ means Gospel • Not only are we to know the word but allow it dwell • (Heb 4:12) – Creates Fruit in Our lives • Allow God's word to Live in You • (Ps 40:8; Jer 31:33; Ezekiel 36:25-27)

  7. How? • With thankfulness in your heart • Making melody in your heart • Parallel in Meaning • Singing is emotional as well as intellectual • “Musical instrument” is our heart • (Ps 71:23; 103:1-2)

  8. Why? • Practical: • Teaching – Addressing one another in all wisdom • (1 Cor 14:15; Col 1:28) • Admonishing one another • Remembrance and Expression of Thankfulness • (James 5:13) • Expression of Praise and Sanctification • (Ps 34:1)

  9. Why? • Typical: – Act of Singing teaches us important lessons • Submission to One Another • (Eph 5:21) “...submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” • Unity • Harmony – “the combination of simultaneous musical notes in a chord” (Webster's)

  10. Conclusion • Singing is important for the development of Christians • Faith – Teaching through song • Exhortation – Motivation – Admonition • Harmony – Fellowship – Brotherhood • Encouragment for us to: • Sing with the spirit and mind • Do not habitually sing: • PRAISE, TEACH, ADMONISH
