  3. Haicheng • Haicheng is a city in china near the coast of the gulf of Chihli • Haicheng had 1,130,000 residents Haicheng has an area of 2,734 square kilometers

  4. The Earthquake • The Haicheng earthquake happened on February 4th 1975 • This earthquake measured 7.0 on the rector scale • The predictions for this earthquake were the most accurate in history • The earthquake was caused by a transform boundary

  5. Location • Haicheng’s exact location is 122° North and 40° West • Haicheng is in the Liaoning province • Haicheng is on the Eurasian plate

Timeline Liaoning province identified with high seismic risk 1970 Long term warning sent out to the population 1972 Anomalies in short term water levels 1973 Flurry of small earthquakes and thousands of reports of strange animal behavior 1974 Chinese Government predicts pending larger seismic event and called for the evacuation of the city 1975 7.3 earthquake strikes Haicheng and surrounding areas 2/4/1975

  7. Aftermath • After the Haicheng earthquake there were 2,041 deaths and 27,538 injuries • If no prediction had been made the injuries and deaths would have exceeded to 150,000 • An estimated 90% of all buildings were destroyed in Haicheng
