  1. FARM ANIMALS

  2. The Humane Slaughter Act, is a United States federal law designed to protect food animals during the moment of their slaughter. According to the law, animals should be stunned into unconsciousness prior to their slaughter to ensure a quick, relatively painless death. The most common methods are electrocution and C02 stunning for swine and captive bolt stunning for cattle, sheep, and goats. LIVESTOCK • Livestock is the term used to refer to a domesticated animal intentionally reared in an agricultural setting to produce things such as food or fibre, or for its labor. Livestock may be raised for subsistence or for profit. Raising animals is an important component of modern agriculture. It has been practiced in many societies, since the transition to farming from hunter-gather lifestyles. HUMANE SLAUGHTER

  3. Environmental enrichment International Veterinary Information Service (IVIS) is a not-for-profit organization established to provide information to veterinarians, veterinary students and animal health professionals worldwide using Internet technology . • Behavioral enrichment=environmental enrichment, is the practice of providing animals under managed care with environmental stimuli. • its goal is to improve an animal's quality of life by increasing physical activity, stimulating natural behaviors, and preventing or reducing neural disorders including stereotypical behaviors. • enrichment can be beneficial to any relatively intelligent animal, including mammals, birds, and even octopuses • it may be offered to animals in the following situations: • Captive animals in zoos and related institutions. • Animals in sanctuaries. • Animals used for research.

  4. DID YOU KNOW THAT… Most lipsticks contain fish scales? The world population of chickens is about equal to the number of people? Pigs are the only animals that will drink hard liquor voluntarily? Most cows give more milk when they listen to music?

  5. Livestock factories • Health impacts of livestock factories? • livestock factories produce and store large quantities of animal waste in leak-prone lagoons so, water is at risk. • Manure spills, fish kills and poisoned water supplies have become a fact of life for too many rural communities. Unhealthy tap water has sickened people across the Midwest and Southeast. • Livestock factories also pose a threat to our air quality. Economic impacts of livestock factories? • The huge corporations that run the livestock factories are edging out family farmers, who often use more environmentally friendly techniques. • Homeowners can be hit just as hard as businessmen. Owning a home might be the American dream, but a hog operation in the backyard is a nightmare for property values. • Environmental impacts of livestock factories? • Fish and wildlife also suffer from manure spills. • manure from giant chicken factories, polluted the waters, killing thousands of fish and sickened more than a dozen people. The Mississippi River bears the brunt of the pollution from Midwest livestock operations, and the pollutants that flow down the river to the Gulf of Mexico has contributed to a dead zone the size of New Jersey.
