  2. Conference of European Statisticians (CES) Provides a framework for UNECE work on Gender Statistics Functions of the CES in ECE work on Gender Statistics • Approves new work • Monitors progress through annual updates • Ensures work plan is carried out • Maintains relevance of work

  3. Areas in which we work • Data dissemination and collection • Measurement of violence against women (VAW) • Process to change data collection and dissemination in National Statistical System • Emerging issues for UNECE • Gender and minorities

  4. UNECE Activities • Methodological work • Manual of how to gender sensitize national statistical offices • Framework of indicators on gender statistics • Technical cooperation • Regional and national workshops on gender statistics – held twice a year

  5. Structure of work • Gender Focal Point Network • UNECE Regional Work Session every 2 years • Meeting place for Gender FPs, users, and key international organizations active in the region (e.g., UNDAW, UNDP, FAO, UNFPA, UNIFEM, EU, OECD, ILO, WHO)

  6. Structure of work… • Steering Group on Gender Statistics • 3 Task Forces • TF on Gender Sensitization Training for Statisticians • TF on Violence Against Women • TF on UNECE Gender Statistics Database

  7. Steering Group Main objectives: • Coordinate the work of the TFs • Plan future UNECE meetings and workshops in the field of gender statistics

  8. Task Force on Gender-sensitisation Training for Statisticians Objectives: • Collect available training materials and make them available • Develop a training module for future use • UNECE’s Manual on Gender-sensitization Training for Statisticians

  9. Task Force on Gender-sensitization Training for Statisticians… • Participation • Country representatives from Serbia, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States and UNECE. • Partners • World Bank Institute, FAO, UNDP, UNFPA

  10. Task Force on Violence Against Women • Exchange and promote methods for specialized VAW surveys • Define common concepts, develop a core set of indicators and identify a minimum set of questions for a short-module that can be incorporated into on-going surveys

  11. Task Force on Violence Against Women… • Participation • Country representative from Serbia, Italy, Canada, HEUNI, OHCHR, UNDAW, WHO, UNIFEM and UNECE. • Academic institutions active in VAW research

  12. Task Force on UNECE Gender Statistics Database • Foster collaboration and discussion with National Statistical Offices and other international organizations working on similar databases • Provide suggestions on new indicators or modifications to the UNECE database • Develop a marketing strategy to reach out to users • Coordinate/produce publications using data from the UNECE database on a regular basis, possibly in collaboration with national agencies and international organizations

  14. How the TFs carry out their work • Main means of communication  E-mail  Audioconferences • Occasional TF meetings with specific aims to further the work • E.g., TF Meetings on Gender Sensitization to produce the outline for the Manual

Challenges • Making it happen • How to encourage Statistical Offices to change their methodologies to incorporate gender into the foundation of their statistics • How to engage managers of Statistical Offices in understanding why gender needs to be integrated in their work • Violence Against Women • Development and maintenance of collaborative efforts from different constituencies and expertise

  16. Challenges… • Use of data from the Database and marketing of the Database • How to better disseminate the data and encourage usage by Statistical Offices and other users
