  1. Narrative Writing Mrs. Alampi-Cortez Fall Semester 2011 Essentials of English

  2. What is a narrative essay? • Narratives offer the author a chance to think & write about themselves. • A narrative essay tells a story/memory. • A form of expository writing. • Narrative essays are told from a defined point of view (the author’s).

  3. How should I begin my narrative essay? • Narrative hook/ Introduction • Dialogue: “Hurry or you’ll be late!” called my mother from the bottom of the stairs. If only I had known what that day would bring. I would have stayed in bed. • Question: Have you ever had one of those days where you wish you would’ve stayed in bed? • Vivid Description: The sun was warm on my back as I raced toward the yellow school bus. As I nestled into the worn leather seat, the look on my face was one of confidence & contentment. With a jerk, the bus rumbled down the road, and I was on my way to the worst day of my life.

  4. How should I begin? • An Interesting Fact or Statistic: Shock has been known to kill ten year olds. It can cause brains to explode and hearts to stop dead still. These thoughts raced through my mind as I stood in front of my classmates. I wish I’d stayed in bed! • Sound Effects: “Bzzzzz!” The sound of my alarm clock droned in my ears as I struggled to come awake. With a start I sat up straight in my bed. This was the big day & I had to be on time.

  5. Narrative Writing • Your narrative should include all of the elements of plot (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution) • Since the story is about you, it should be written in 1st person POV. • Stories should always answer Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

  6. Narrative Writing • Use vivid verbs • Use sensory details that allow your reader to share your memory with you • Make sure everything you are writing relates back to ONE event/ memory/ story. Do not veer off topic!

  7. Details for your assignment • 1-1 ½ pages in length • Typed, Times New Roman (12pt), double spaced • Well-organized & logical-STAY ON TOPIC • Few spelling or grammar errors-USE SPELL CHECK!!!!

  8. TIPS • Choose the most significant change in your life & use guiding questions on rubric • Essay should be at least 4 paragraphs total • Introduction w/ hook • 1st body-explanation of change & how it impacted you • 2nd body-Emotions that came with change, impact on others around you • Closing/Reflection-How this change has impacted the person you are today. Regrets, etc..you may have
